Brake Check's Actions Result in Deaths of Three
On August 8, 2004, three young people were killed in a tragic automobile accident due to the gross negligence of Brake Check in failing to properly train or equip their employees in the replacement of the brakes of one of the vehicles involved only 12 days prior to the accident.
Conclusions of the Texas Peace Officer's Crash Report
The conclusion of the official Texas Peace Officer's Crash Report dated 3/23/09 stated, "Through the investigation, it was learned the brakes on Unit #1 (the GMC Yukon) had been serviced prior to the crash. It was also learned the brakes were improperly adjusted and air was left in the lines causing the driver's inability to safely stop as he approached the slowing traffic." (emphasis added)
A further, more detailed synopsis of the investigation and conclusion of the Texas DPS State Crash Team, which was hand delivered to me on April 1, 2009 by the then Director of the Texas Department of Public Safety, Col. Stan Clark, concluded that "Speed was discounted from this crash, as all other vehicles in front of and behind Caven, who were traveling at approximately the same speed, were able to maneuver to a safe position. The team concluded that had Caven had properly working brakes, he would have been able to avoid this crash." (emphasis added)
The purpose of this site is to provide you with important information about Brake Check's general practices and work performed on my son's 2000 GMC Yukon that directly led to his death and the tragic death of two other young adults on August 8, 2004. In connection with a civil suit I brought against Brake Check, we discovered that Brake Check failed to follow industry standards in assembling the rear brakes and bleeding the hydraulic brake system of the GMC Yukon. The combination of numerous errors and omissions by Brake Check led to a major accident only 12 days later.
I lost my only son due to Brake Check's gross negligence. I am providing this information about Brake Check's shoddy workmanship and poor business practices in the hope that public disclosure of this information may ensure that this will not happen to anyone else.

Letter from Texas Department of Public Safety Highway Patrol Chief
On June 1, 2009, Texas DPS Highway Patrol Chief David G. Baker wrote a letter to me officially confirming that he had requested a reconstruction of the accident by the Texas Highway Patrol State Crash Team. The amended crash report indicated that a vehicle defect (brakes) were the factor contributing to the crash.
